I've spent almost 40 years studying andliving in East Asia. I can say unequivocally that Japanese educationabout WW2 is utterly inadequate. As a result, the vast majority of peoplein Japan don't know how horrific the Japanese occupation of China was. (I'm most familiar with this aspect of the Japanese aggression.) Chinesepeople, on the other hand, are educated in a system that CONSTANTLY remindsthem of the facts of "China's humiliation." This asymmetry isone of the greatest drivers of problems in East Asia.
我在东亚学习生活了近40年。我可以毫不犹豫地说，日本关于二战的教育是完全不够的，这就导致绝大多数日本人根本不知道日本对中国的占领是多么地可怕。（这方面我最熟悉）。另一方面，中国人却接受了系统教育，不断提醒着他们这段“屈辱历史”。这种不对称性是推动东亚的最大问题之一。

That is a difficult question. I am aJapanese citizen, and I have grandparents who were adolescents during the waryears. They often say how Japan would never have gotten through the majorimprovement in technology in the 1970s if it had not been for the war. However,they both have seen the war in their own eyes and say that it is not possibleto regret the war, because it was not like they actually fought. Also, theincident of the people in Nanjing has two sides to the same story, and thisbecomes another problem. No two people have the same information, especially ifChinese and Japanese.
这个问题很困难。我是一个日本公民，祖父母在战争年代渡过了青少年时期。他们经常说，如果没有这场战争，日本就永远撑不过70年代的重大技术改进。但是，他们都亲眼目睹了战争，说不为它感到后悔，因为完全不像真正在打仗。而且，“南京大屠杀”事件有两个版本，这也就成为了另外一个问题。没有人会有同样的信息，尤其是中国人和日本人。

We do have shame for the incidents, however, the thought of "we know theprice of war" because of the two atomic bombs, is stronger. Why weJapanese rarely talk about the incidents is because we, the Japanese, aregenerally a people who do not speak our minds. It is part of our culture. Soyes we do have shame, but it, partly because of the sea between China andJapan, are not often reminded of them. In Japan, we feel shame, but in solemnprayers, not out loud.然而，我们还是会为这些事件感到羞愧，也知道了“战争的代价”，因为两颗原子弹实在是太厉害了。至于我们日本人很少谈论这些事件的原因就在于，我们是不会说出自己想法的普通人，这是我们文化的一部分。所以，我们会羞愧的部分原因是中美之间的海域，而不是想到过去。在日本，我们会羞愧，但不会出声，就像庄严的祈祷。
