I've lived in Japan for 17 years and have amaster's degree in military history from a US university. I think most Japaneseare barely aware of what happened during WWII. Any media coverage of the warfocuses largely on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Because of the atomic bombs they'vesettled into thinking of themselves as victims. They also seem content to speakof war as something that "happened" not that people did.

I'm also quite certain that few Japanese realized the difference between theway the Japanese soldiers behaved and the way soldiers from, say, the UKbehaved during the war. There is little understanding that even war has rules.From what I've read a German soldier captured by the British would have beentreated properly. That is, he would have been given clothing, food and a placeto sleep. He would not have been forced to work and he would have been able tosend and receive letters and packages through the Red Cross.
